The Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) published its latest annual report outlining its key achievements in 2018.

BIC is the private partner in the €3.7 billion public-private partnership with the EU – the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) and is the only industry-led European bioeconomy association, pioneering investment and creating synergies for a sustainable, European circular bioeconomy. Its membership includes more than 240 industry members covering the whole value chain, from primary production to brand owners and end-users.

Thanks to the BBI JU, knowledge and investments in innovative biobased production processes are now staying in Europe. BIC companies have around EUR 5.5 billion of investments in the pipeline in Europe for 2018, compared to EUR 2 billion in 2014.

In 2018 call for proposals, 18 new projects were funded with €85,944,261 of funds granted to 224 beneficiaries from 27 different countries.

  • Gap analysis of achievements 2014-2018 versus SIRA and production of Priority Paper 2019-2020
  • Development of the Annual Work Plan 2019 in collaboration with the European Commission, the Scientific Committee, the States Representative Group and the BBI JU Project Office
  • BIC Matchmaking event 2018: > 200 attendees and 400 one-to-one meetings
  • Draft Vision 2050 developed based on input from members and others
  • Industry expert group formed for the 3 granted CSA projects in 2018
  • BIC advisory role in seven projects/programmes
  • Strategic outreach visit to 12 companies in Portugal
  • Multiple meetings with BIC members and potential new members
  • Presenting BIC at industry meetings in 13 countries
  • Interviews across various media focusing on the Annual Work Programme
